There are always storylines producers turn to when they want to grab headlines - affairs, terminal illness and murder being among the most popular. And then there are drugs. And more drugs. Now look. I know they are a big problem in society and that it's part of soap's function to educate as well as entertain. But the constant recurrence of drug issues makes for immense tedium because the subject is so limited dramatically. There are only two endings to any plot: people come off drugs or they stay on them and suffer dire consequences. The Taylors are the newest family to arrive in Albert Square in this week's EastEnders Barely have we recovered from Holly's drug overdose death in Emmerdale than the show is promising us a Breaking Bad-style storyline in which the Barton boys discover a cannabis farm. One word: boring. This week, Coronation Street is at it, too, when a face from Robert's past turns up, offering drugs. Robert turns them down, but Daniel is an eager purchaser and ends up unconscious. Well, that's one good outcome. To every cloud and all that. EASTENDERS: WHO LET THE DOGS OUT? When any new family turns up in soapland, it's like The Muppet Show descending en masse. In Albert Square it's the Muppets multiplied by Fraggle Rock. The new Taylors are no exception. Aidan and Maria try to keep their affair a secret but Adam snaps them sharing a smooch in Coronation Street Noisy, brash and skint, they also have a dog - a real one, as opposed to the kennel of creatures that is the family. They bring the proverbial secret past that all newcomers have and they look as if they dress not from Poundland, but Penceland (were it to exist). Lauren is in business mode again, despite looking incapable of switching a computer on, let alone using PowerPoint. This time she faces a hard day helping Max with an important presentation; let's hope it at least sees him opening that briefcase, the inside of which has barely seen daylight since the character first appeared in 2006. Let's also hope Max has worked out what he actually does, because for a decade he's seemed as mystified as the rest of us.Also on the work front, Carmel and Kim encourage Denise to apply for a job at the town hall. What job? The only city official in Walford is the market inspector. Given the number of coppers always on the prowl, the BBC simply doesn't have enough in its budget for another beige mac, the uniform of authority figures. CORONATION STREET: A PHOTO FINISH? What happens in the ginnel never stays in the ginnel. When are people going to learn that? The latest victims of Ginnelgate are Aidan and Maria, who, trying to keep their affair a secret, kiss in Weatherfield's most exposed area. Adam's nearby and photographs the liaison to use as leverage against Aidan. Is Adam going to resort to blackmail and, if so, what does he hope to achieve? Free gussets for life? Aidan hardly has a lot of goodies to hand. He's also just got engaged to Eva after her surprise proposal and Mexican-themed party. How soon before the Tequila Sunrise turns to sunset, with Maria urging him to leave Eva for her? I suspect it's not going to happen, prompting Maria to utter that well known self-analysis of old: ‘How shtoopid am I?' Let me answer that now (and not for the first - or last - time, methinks). Very. How will Rhona react when she finds Pierce in her living room in Emmerdale? The romance between Brian and Cathy is blossoming when he asks her out on a proper date. This is a great pairing, and the couple would be well suited to taking over the Rovers at some point. It'll be interesting to see how Cathy's ex Roy reacts. However he does, rest assured that there'll be three people in that relationship. Back in Boring Barlowland, Ken suggests that Daniel see a therapist, but Daniel refuses as he thinks he doesn't deserve any help. Anyone who's ever lived with Sinead deserves all the help they can get. EMMERDALE: BARING SOULS AND BODIES Talk about heaping tedium upon tedium. Rhona's had so many drug threads, you could knit sweaters from them; and now, in addition to the Barton boys discovering a cannabis farm (yawn), there's another drug thread when Rhona comes across some pills. Will she be tempted to take them and, when Paddy tells Pierce about her problem, will Pierce use it against her to twist the truth? At least there is a semblance of normality now that Priya has slept with Pete (hasn't everyone?). She confesses her adultery and tells Rakesh she no longer loves him. That's something for him to celebrate, anyway. Advertisement Here is my page: Publisher 2013 WindowsInteract
